It was a family day at our dentist today. Omar was propped onto the chair ( with some help from dad) for his first dental check up and he opened wide for Dr Tim. Big Ahhhhhhhh...Mummy on the other hand was feeling swollenly numb after the injection I was given.

He was rewarded with stickers for his terrific teeth. Bravo!

Fig and Olive oil cake

This is a healthy sort of upside down cake, the kind that substitutes white sugar for palm sugar. Butter for olive oil. You get the jist. I usually love my cakes creamy but every once in awhile, not having the cream is good. Truth be told the cake is actually good taste wise well atleast according to my little taste tester.

You'll need:
  • 2 cups self raising flour,( if you'd like to substitute and make it all the more healthier, you could choose one of those healthier brown flours like whole wheat )
  • 3/4 cup of palm sugar
  • 1/2 cup of honey
  • 1/4 cup Olive oil
  • 3 egg yolks
  • A cup of milk
  • 5 figs sliced
You'll then have to:
  • Preheat the oven to 180°C
  • Heat the palm sugar and honey in a pan and bring to a boil. Add some water along the way
  • Mix the flour with the milk
  • Beat the eggs and olive oil and add to the flour
  • Pour in the sugar mixture and fold all the ingredients together
  • Grease a baking pan and arrange the figs around it.
  • Drizzle some of the remaining sugar mixture onto the figs
  • Pour the batter over it and bake for 40 minutes.
  • Once baked , let cool then cut a slice and drizzle some honey on the top.Bon Apetite.

Making Banana cake with your eyes shut!

Sometimes I feel like I'm feeding a monkey tribe, bananas are like the must have fruit around here. When Bananas are at a really good price we buy enough to actually feed a tribe. Anyone remember back in 2007 due to the bad weather and the banana plantations in Queensland were heavily affected, Banana prices sky rocketed to like $13 a kilogram. I remember being on a banana ration then. Going a little off tangent but this is what I read recently ,"Bananas have escaped relatively unscathed after the recent Floods in Queensland" That's a good thing considering bananas is a vital food resouce with that much needed energy booster for the massive cleanup. me and my random thoughts! My sympathy goes out to the Australians who have lost their everything in the floods. May they be on the road to recovery. In the meanwhile here's a Banana Cake recipe to enjoy.

You'll need :
  • 4 Bananas mashed(that are turning a little brown on the outside but still edible on the inside not that you cant use greenish yellowish bananas but they are just less soft).
  • 2 cups of Self Raising Flour
  • 2 eggs
  • A cup of milk
  • 125 gm of butter
  • A cup of brown sugar
  • A dash of vanilla

You'll then have to:
  • Cream the sugar and thebutter,
  • Add the sifted flour,
  • Add the beaten eggs
  • pour in the milk and dash of vanilla.
  • Mix it all together till it becomes a smooth batter
  • Stir in the mashed bananas
  • Pour into a cake tin
  • Bake in an oven at 180°C for about half an hour
  • And enjoy for afternoon tea. Told you, you could make this cake with your eyes shut!

Happy Baking!

the drama of cutting nails

Omar does not like getting his nails cut and so we go through a big commotion everytime it needs cutting. The two of us have to hold him down and he will wiggle and scream as loud as he possibly can. After it's all over, he gives a very I'm upset how could you cut my nails look and demands for ' Losen' which is Lotion. Despite the protest he seems to know what a pedicure and manicure is it seems :)

Look at this facial expression, not sure if this is the happy customer or half satisfied look ... too much my little cawwot ,:)

My poor little cawwot had an accident at the playarea in carousel today which left him with an egg bump on his forehead. MashaAllah he is a brave boy with a strong threshold for pain, Allah Karem, I would have been bawling had I fallen the way he did.

The summer heat is really testing. I try to stay indoors as much as possible because it is ridiculous to go anywhere in the mid afternoons, it is even more ridculous that they hardly have shaded parking areas here but the thing is most official things are close by 5 (Trading hours here in Perth deserves a post of its own) So anyway you will need to somehow someway get things done and it is hard to avoid the sunshine. The positive aspect is that you will get enough vitamin d along the way, I was told I was vitamin d deficient when I was preggers with Omar , oh well! The heat is intense I have not tried that cooking an egg theory but I'm sure it could. So anyways we spend alot of our time at home splashing and sploshing! We don't have a pool but the bath does its job.

The Skinny chef and The Shimmy chef

This post is a little belated but nonetheless worth documenting. To welcome in the new year, my sister and I organized a get together for our mutual friends. My sister got married last July and now lives in Perth, a good 7 minutes away from me. It's so great to have my sister here as we get to do alot of things together like cooking and ........ a whole lot of other sisterly activities :D Big grin! I am the skinny chef and she is the Shimmy chef, our cooking powers combined we whipped up our version of an Italian spread for the evening. I'm a huge believer that Food brings people together and it was so lovely to have all the wonderful girl friends we have made in Perth come along for Our Girls night out. I can't post pictures of the great fun we had but here are pictures I'd like to post of the food we made pre and post production :) This post is picture heavy so enjoy.

Potato basil salad.
Lasagne, thanks to our old neighbour Doreen for sharing her recipe. It's got all the italian secrets in it.
My sister makes the best Prawn Penne ever.
